Bathurst has a new visitors’ guide highlighting accessible tourist attractions, businesses and accommodation providers.
The book was launched yesterday by Bathurst mayor Gary Rush and Bathurst Regional Access Committee chair Bob Triming.
The guide has been produced to help those with mobility difficulties fully explore the attractions and sites of the Bathurst region.
Mr Triming said it was time the booklet was updated and it now offers a much better representation of whether a venue is fully accessible or partially accessible.
It features a comprehensive map as well as handy hints.
“It’s important for visitors to have that knowledge,” Mr Triming said.
He said people with mobility difficulties, including older travellers, put a lot of tourism dollars into the economy.
Bathurst Regional Access Committee vice chair Monica Schrader hopes the Visitors’ Guide to Accessible Bathurst will attract more people to Bathurst.
Cr Rush acknowledged the work of the Bathurst Regional Access Committee and its determination to ensure that people with a disability are catered for and considered in the daily functioning of the city and region.
“The opportunities around visitor accommodation for people with a disability are expanding rapidly and this will help them do their homework,” he said.
“They will be able to determine prior to their visit exactly what accessible options are available.”
Cr Rush said the booklet will soon be available online to help visitors plan their holiday to the Bathurst region.
“Everyone likes to do research before they come to an area,” he said.
“We will continue to update the guide on a regular basis as more and more information becomes available.”
