  • The hotel chain of the ONCE Business Corporation (CEOSA) has achieved the standard of excellence in terms of accessibility, as it has obtained the AENOR certification for its 17 hotels
  • The AENOR Universal Access certification guarantees that any person, with or without a disability, has the same opportunities to access and enjoy the hotel services
  • The attendees at the event have been able to take a guided tour so as to understand what is meant by universal access.

Confortel Hoteles, a hotel chain of the ONCE Business Corporation (CEOSA), has achieved the standard of excellence in terms of accessibility, as it has obtained the Universal Access Certification from the Spanish Standardisation and Certification Association (AENOR) for all of its hotels, in a ceremony chaired by the Chairman of SEGITTUR, Antonio López de Ávila, which was held last Thursday at the Hotel Confortel Atrium of Madrid.

The ceremony was also attended by Manuel López Cachero, Chairman of the Spanish Standardisation and Certification Association (AENOR); Juan Molas, Chairman of the Spanish Confederation of Hotels and Tourist Accommodation (CEHAT); Miguel Carballeda, Chairman of the ONCE and of its Foundation; and Alberto Durán, Chairman of CEOSA.

Furthermore, the attendees at the event have been able to take a guided tour of the facilities of the Hotel Confortel Atrium, during which the person responsible for Accessibility at Confortel Hoteles, Beatriz Rubio, explained what is meant by Universal Access, and demonstrated the characteristics and installations of the hotel in order to offer to its clients, with or without a disabilities, the same opportunities to access and enjoy the services provided by the hotel.

The AENOR Universal Access certification has allowed Confortel to carry out several improvements, which give rise to an environment and services which satisfy the Universal Design conditions, the objective of which is to benefit all of the hotel users. The improvements include, among others, the following:

  • All of the staff of Confortel Hoteles have received and maintain the qualification in order to attend to persons with disabilities (reception staff, restaurant staff, etc.)
  • The adaptation of all of the facilities (rooms, gymnasium, day-care centres and children’s toys, sports facilities, swimming pools, cafeterias, etc.).
  • The design and placement of furniture.
  • In respect of the buffet service, by means of signs which identify juices, different milks or the preparation of food products without gluten.
  • The hotel indications, which allow all of the hotel users to make use of the installations in an independent manner; also the indication of the routes in the parking area.
  • The existence of ergonomic hand-rails on the stairs and ramps which help to get around the hotel.
  • In the elevators, with high contrast buttons.

One of the virtues of this hotel chain is that it has been able to adapt not only the facilities and services of its urban hotels but also its holiday hotels, which are the most complicated to adapt, for the greatest diversity of users and facilities.

The certification of all of the hotels has been achieved after obtaining the recognition of the hotels Confortel Fuengirola (Malaga), Confortel Islantilla (Huelva), Confortel Calas de Conil (Cádiz) and Confortel Golf Badajoz (Badajoz), which completed in 2011 the list of the 17 Confortel hotels which have received the AENOR certification pursuant to the Universal Access Standard: UNE 170001-2:2007.

The certification confirms that the Confortel hotels have implemented an Accessibility Management System which promotes the continuous improvement of the system, given that the AENOR Universal Access Certification guarantees that any person, with or without a disability, has the same opportunities to access and enjoy the services provided by the hotel.

The hotel chain is a pioneer in the promotion of accessible tourism. The Confortel Pío XIIhotel was the first establishment within the Spanish tourism sector that obtained this distinction, in 2007. Subsequently, this hotel establishment renewed its certification in 2010, given that AENOR reviews on an annual basis and renews, if applicable, the certifications of the hotels every three years.
