Airlines hit on disability policy

DOMESTIC airlines should lift their game and improve access for Australians with wheelchairs, national Disability Discrimination Commissioner Graeme Innes said yesterday.

He said it was not acceptable that people were still being turned away at airports because they relied on electric wheelchairs.

“Qantas is the only airline that accepts more than two passengers with electric wheelchairs on each domestic flight,” Mr Innes said.

“There is still a long way to go,” he said.

Mr Innes flew in to Tasmania yesterday to attend a public meeting on improving access to the justice system for people with a disability.

Today he attends a celebration of the 20th anniversary of the federal Disability Discrimination Act, including a screening of films about how people have been able to change their lives by lodging complaints through the legal system.

The screening is at the CCAMLR headquarters (the former Hutchins School building) at 181 Macquarie St at 5.30pm.

The films will also be on YouTube and those who missed yesterday’s public meeting can contribute to the discussion online at humanrights.gov.au
